Heavily potted jar with ovoid body, short neck and thickened lip, the unglazed base recessed within a broad foot ring. Around the sides a landscape with undulating clouds and a procession of three horsemen in the company of four attendants approaching a pavilion, where a scholar and an attendant are awaiting their arrival. Around the neck a design of trellis over a ground of crosses and squares. On the shoulder a honeycomb diaper pattern, reserved with four eight-lobed medallions enclosing sprays. Around the base a border of pointed leaves. The figures on this guan may represent immortals, legendary or historical characters. Compared to their masters the attendants are smaller. This manner of conveying persons of different status can also be observed in Chinese painting. The undulating clouds and the bent grasses give the impression of a windy environment. A bank of clouds indicating the end of the scene is set to the left of the pavilion. The painting on the jar is refined with much attention given to detail as is evident in the mens clothing, the horses and the pavilion, a characteristic Chinese open building with upturned eaves at the roof. Although large jars of this type were both made in Jingdezhen and in private kilns (min yao) in the area, this one is likely to be a product from Jingdezhen. A guan decorated with the same main scene but with a band of flying cranes among clouds on the shoulder and a wave border at the foot is in the British Museum. In the Van Diepen collection is a guan with a similar main scene, the scholar and his attendant standing outside the pavilion.
